Engine swap-a-bration: Concorso Italiano highlights once-repowered Ferraris

For all their vaunted status and multiple millions they sell for these days, Ferraris were once used cars – yesterday’s news with an engine that in many cases proved a liability rather than another part of the mystique. So while an engine swap in any other car’s past might make for a curiosity, engine-swapped Ferraris qualify for a class all their own at this year’s Concorso Italiano.

As Randy Cook, author of two books devoted specifically to engine-swapped Ferraris – Bowtie Ferraris and Blue Oval, et al, Ferraris – noted, not every vintage Ferrari owner likes to admit that his car once relied on something as common as a Chevrolet or Ford V-8 for power. “Some people do, though some don’t want the notoriety,” he said. “Even when it’s public knowledge, some don’t want it to be publicized.”

Yet Cook has documented 99 instances in which former owners ditched the original Ferrari engine for one either more powerful, more reliable, or more easily serviced: 76 of them using Chevrolet engines, 14 using Ford engines, four using Buicks, two using Offenhausers, and one each using a Chrysler, Mercedes, and Maserati engine. Pretty much all of them occurred in the mid-Fifties through late 1960s.

Cook said he believes still more engine-swapped Ferraris remain undocumented. “My guess is that every one that went to South America had an American engine in it at one point,” he said.

Generally, Cook said, owners of street-driven Ferraris chose to repower their cars following a failure of the original engine. As for Ferraris dedicated to racing, about half got repowered following an engine failure, the rest because another engine was cheaper to maintain or because another engine proved more competitive.

“For example, they could still run the same class with a 5.0-liter Chevrolet engine that they previously ran with the original 3.0-liter Ferrari engine,” Cook said.

Noteworthy examples of Ferraris that once relied on something other than Ferrari power include 0666, the first 250 Testa Rossa, which famously sold for $16 million five years ago (and which had a Ford V-8 installed in the mid-1960s); and 0235, a 212 Inter Pinin Farina cabriolet displayed at Paris and Brussels when new (and which later received a Chevrolet V-8).

Almost every engine-swapped Ferrari returned to Maranello power during the price bubble of the late 1980s and early 1990s, largely thanks to collector Dick Merritt, who stockpiled at least two dozen removed Ferrari engines during the years prior. Cook said that, to his knowledge, only one Ferrari remains with its swapped engine still underhood: serial number 1175, the 1959 250 GT Series 1 Pinin Farina coupe that he once owned and that inspired the Concorso class when Tom McDowell spotted it at last year’s event.

Perhaps due to the reluctance of current-day Ferrari owners to address the engine-swap history of their cars, Cook said he and McDowell are still searching for examples to fill the class. Among those slated to appear are the above mentioned serial number 0235 and serial number 0438, a 1954 500 Mondial once powered by a 320hp Corvette V-8.

Concorso Italiano takes place August 20 at Black Horse Golf Course in Monterey Bay, California. For more information, visit Concorso.com.

Ferraris of the Future On Show As Design Contest Heats Up

content_marketing_opi_photo594504-09-2013

The future of Ferrari sports cars has been on show with artist impressions of what models of 2025 might look like, according to CarScoops.com.

Designer Christophe Jourd’hui presented his visualized concept, the Ferrari ‘Getto’, to reflect his views on how the supercars of tomorrow might look. The concept was submitted as part of a Ferrari design competition, but has already attracted strong interest online from Ferrari fans.

Andrei Nedelea of Carscoops.comsaid that the design worked because it had such a strong concept. “The idea behind the car is the maximization of the sensation the driver gets when behind the wheel, through the use of a floating cockpit, which is sustained by chassis cross members from above, as well as jacks mounted in key points on the structure underneath it.”

The Getto, named after the Italian word for ‘Jet’, resembles a more space age but surprisingly familiar-shaped vehicle. While it has its own distinct shape, the Getto draws much of its design influences from the heritage and style of Ferrari models past.

From first glance at the plans, you can tell this car is fine-tuned for speed. Its low center of gravity would certainly give it a kick. Clearly not the best choice for those with a large family to taxi around, the Getto is all about speed and sophistication – even if it does look a little cramped.

The concept depicts a vivid red Getto – instantly striking with its classic Ferrari look. The sleek curves of the chassis reveal a much more aerodynamic approach to the design. It is unlikely the model will ever go into production, but some Ferrari fans are already calling for a concept prototype to be built.

Ferrari are currently experiencing weaker than usual sales in its key markets including the EU, China and the US. At present, only Japan is holding up in its demand for new models. Analysts have linked this directly to the worldwide recession, and the company is banking for fortunes to pick up when its customers return to spending mode.

With new ideas like the Getto and the competition that inspired it, Ferrari are hoping to appeal to the next generation of customers as early as possible.

Ferrari is operated by the Fiat Group, a company which operates a number of different car brands including Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Chrysler.

Lynch Chrysler Jeep Dodge, which sell some Fiat Group vehicles, said that Ferraris would always enjoy a special status amongst new car buyers.

“Ferraris have a certain glamour. But underneath the elegant chassis lies the same quality, reliable engineering that powers Chrysler. The future for Ferrari will see a continuation of new models that dazzle and impress, scoring equally on visual appeal as performance.”

Don’t expect to buy the Getto from your local Ferrari dealer any time soon. But as the company continues to innovate and change its approach, the designs it unveils will continue to play a role in the future of supercar design.

Tips to Host an Outstanding Ferrari Birthday Party

Ferrari Birthday Party

Whether you’re throwing a birthday party for your luxury vehicle obsessed child or turning 40 and celebrating the purchase of your next Ferrari, throwing a Ferrari themed birthday party is perfect for people of all ages. Themed birthday parties are awesome on all fronts, and especially awesome if that theme is based around one of the most incredible car brands in history. Not only is a Ferrari themed birthday fun for everyone, but they’re also easy and affordable to throw, too. It’s easy to make every aspect of your birthday party Ferrari related, and the guests will enjoy the creativity  (not to mention the luxury). If you’re looking for tips on how to throw the most awesome Ferrari birthday party ever, check out below.

Guest Gifts

It doesn’t matter if you’re throwing the party for yourself or for your 10-year-old son, you need to have epic party favors if you’re throwing a Ferrari themed party. While it would be nice to hand all of your guests keys to a brand new ride, unless you were in an original investor in a Fortune 500 company then that probably isn’t possible. Opt to make some custom Ferrari mugs from Minespress.com and customize them to your specifications. Include the date of the birthday party, the name of whoever was celebrating, and some pictures of Ferraris or the Ferrari logo. Mugs are a great gift for anything, and your guests will always remember the day every time they use the mug. For a younger person’s party, some miniature Ferrari models might be a good choice.

Decorations

Having awesome decorations is key to making sure that the Ferrari birthday party you throw is a success. Buying packaged party decorations simply won’t cut it, so you need to get creative. Grab some real racing flags and put them up around your house, and get some posters of Ferraris to put up too. Have some games for your guests and have the decorations be the prizes, so your guests can take them home at the end of the day.

Cake

The cake will be the centerpiece of the birthday party, so do not disappoint! If you can, have a custom cake maker craft the cake. This can be expensive, so if it’s not an option there are more affordable ones. It’s not hard to make an epic Ferrari cake on your own, just search around the web to find some inspiration. Add some “decals” to the cake by putting the date and the name of the birthday person on it. If you aren’t up for making a cake, cupcakes can be a great alternative. If you arrange them creatively, your guests will love the cupcakes.

Food

Standard birthday party food will be great for a Ferrari party, but it’s the arrangement that will make the party stand out. Arrange the food on plates with checkered flags on each entrée, and make sure that you keep the colors standard with the rest of the party. Lots of yellow and red is great; the visualization will make everyone enjoy the party more.

Entertainment

Perhaps at the end of the party everybody is tired and you just want to relax? Well, then, you should head out here and enjoy your favorite TV shows: Watch TV Shows Online FREE no sign up

Detailing a $1,000,000 Ferrari 288 GTO [VIDEO]

This is a great video about the awesome Larry at work on one of the very, very rare 288 GTOs. Only 279 were made (according to Wikipedia, 272), though a lot less are still in existence, and, as you can imagine, they are million dollar+ cars.

The video shows Larry working on some pretty bad wash damage, and the approach he takes when detailing a car that uses a variety of materials for its bodywork, from fiber glass to aluminum.

Enjoy!
